Welcome to Benue SUBEB

The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board is an agency of Government established to run the universal Basic Education (UBE) programme in the State. It is pertinent to note that UBE is free basic nine year uninterrupted educational programme which targets education of all children of school going age irrespective of gender, economic background, disability, disadvantaged, being orphaned or vulnerable.

What is today known as Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) was hitherto Benue State Primary Education Board (SPEP). The defunct SPEP was established and inaugurated on the 13th May 1994 in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 96 of 1993.

Following the launching of Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme on 30th September, 1999 in Sokoto State by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo, the programme at the Federal level was passed and signed into Law tagged UBE Act no. on the of 8th August, 2024. In compliance with the provision of the Federal Act, the Benue State Act also put in place and signed on the 30th of June, 2005 by the then Governor George Akume. The State UBE Act was however amended by the then Governor of Benue State Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam on the 3rd of October, 2008. The conduct and activities of the Board SUBEB are now based on the provision of this law.

The specific functions of the Board include:

Management of Primary, Junior Secondary and Special Education Schools in the State.

Recruitment, appointment, promotion and discipline of teaching and non-teaching staff on Grade level 7 and above.

Posting and deployment of Staff, including interstate transfer.

Disbursement of funds provided to it from Federal and State Governments and other sources.

Retirement and re-absorption of teachers f. Setting up an effective functional supervision and monitoring units.

Undertaking new capital projects h. Responsible for the approval, training and re-training of teaching and nonteaching staff.

Assessment and funding of salaries and allowances of teaching and non-teaching staff based on the scheme of service drawn up by the State Government

Ensuring that annual reports are rendered by head of schools on teacher’s appointment to serve under them.

Preparing testimonials and certificates of services for teaching and non-teaching staff whenever necessary.

Dealing with leave matters including annual vacation.

Performing such other functions as may be assigned to the Board by the Commissioner.
